The Relationship between Insulin and Glucagon

The pancreas is an organ in our body that makes two special chemicals called hormones. These hormones, called insulin and glucagon, help keep our blood sugar levels just right. They work together to make sure we have enough energy in our body all the time. Insulin helps move sugar from our blood into our cells, where it can be used for energy. It is released when we have too much sugar in our blood, like after a meal. Glucagon is different, it helps make our blood sugar levels go up. It is released when we have too little sugar in our blood, like when we haven't eaten for a while or when we're doing a lot of exercise. Insulin and glucagon have a very important job of working together to keep our blood sugar levels in a normal range. Insulin helps bring down high sugar levels, and glucagon helps bring up low sugar levels. If these two hormones don't work well together, it can cause problems for our health. This can include problems like resistance to insulin, type 2 diabetes and other health issues. It's important to keep these hormones balanced in order to keep our blood sugar levels healthy and our body working well.

The Insulin to Glucagon Ratio

The insulin to glucagon ratio is about the balance of two hormones in the body. The insulin hormone is made by the pancreas and helps store energy. The glucagon hormone is also made by the pancreas and helps burn energy. How much of these hormones are in our body can affect if we store or burn fat, and can also affect how our body fights illness and gets old. A high insulin to glucagon ratio can make it more likely to be overweight, have problems with the immune system and get sick often. It can also make it harder for the body to use insulin. A low insulin to glucagon ratio can help the body fight illness and be healthy, help lose weight, and can help make brown fat which keeps us warm. What we eat after not eating for a while can also change the ratio. Eating things like sugar and carbs can increase insulin and decrease glucagon, making it easier to store fat. Eating things like fat and protein can do the opposite and make it easier to burn fat. When we eat and what we eat with can also change the ratio. A diet that has less carbs and more protein and fat can lead to a lower insulin to glucagon ratio. This can help lose weight and prevent getting sick often. This is different from the typical diet in America, which usually has a lot of carbs.
